Finding And Purchasing Remanufactured Engines

By John Hall

All vehicles will at some point suffer a failure or a breakdown and will need mechanical repairs and parts to be fitted. In more severe cases a complete new engine may be required to get your car up and running again. This can be costly and a cost effective alternative is to purchase remanufactured engines to get your car back on the road.

A brand new engine purchased from a vehicle manufacture is going to cost you thousands of dollars. There are firms that will now take your existing power unit, strip it down and rebuild it so that it functions as it should. Buying and installing one of these units will save a substantial amount of money and it is better for the environment.

There are a couple of ways to get a remanufactured engine for your vehicle and both have benefits. A ready to fit unit can be purchased from a supplier that specializes in refurbishing power plants or you can send your broken one to them and have it reconditioned. Both options are cheaper than buying a brand new unit from a vehicle maker and the unit will be reliable.

There are a large number of auto stores in most areas that can source a remanufactured engine that will be suitable for your vehicle. All of the major models of car will be catered for and if they have a compatible unit in stock it will be ready to fit. If they do not have your particular item in stock they will usually be able to order one for you from one of their suppliers.

Another way to locate a power plant is to look on the web at one of the engineering firms that are advertised. Their web sites will have a comprehensive list of stock for you to look at and if you order they will dispatch it overnight. It is useful to call or email them before finalizing your order to check that what you are purchasing is correct for your vehicle.

If a supplier does not have a compatible engine in stock they will ask you to send your unit for them to recondition. Their team of engineers will carry out all of the work required to get it running before sending it back for fitting. Many companies will offer a service where they will collect your vehicle, work on the engine and deliver the vehicle back to you, ready to drive.

If you have to use the services of a courier firm to send your engine for rebuild there are some things to consider. Engines are very heavy and will be expensive to ship by road due to the firms charging by the gross weight of the package. Always make sure that the unit is properly crated and insured against damage or loss in transit.

Most firms who work on car motors will offer a guarantee on their finished product. This will either be a mileage or time based guarantee against future failures. When you take delivery of your remanufactured unit it is essential that you inspect it and keep the paperwork that comes with the unit in case you need to contact the company under the terms of the guarantees offered.
