The Equipment Used In A Material Handling Transportation

By Roger Snyder

Material handling is a type of transportation that is often utilized in most buildings for transportation or movement of materials. It uses different equipment that may either be semi automated, automated or manual and this includes the consideration for storage, control, and protection of the facilities. These processes are being done in the warehousing, consumption, disposal, manufacturing, and distribution.

Material handling is also very important for logistics and for manufacturing. The items will be transported over time by the use of a conveyor, lift truck, or any other equipment for material handling transportation in the retail stores, manufacturing plants, and warehouses. This process also is required in most production jobs because the operators are using this for transporting the various goods to industrial settings.

Manual handling is one type of this which refers to the movement of containers by the use of the workers hands when lowering, emptying, carrying, lifting, and filling them. Using this may possibly expose the workers into some physical conditions which may result to serious injuries specifically, musculoskeletal disorders. This type of disorder often involves sprains and strains to the shoulders, upper limbs, and lower back.

The semi automated handling is the commonly utilized type as the alternative for the manual handling. This semi automated type still involves the work of operators because at times, it is difficult for the machines for driving, unloading, and for loading tasks. The tasks may still be difficult to be performed by machines in spite of the sensing, robotics, and the machine intelligence advancements.

The transport facilities will be used for the movement of materials from a particular location to another while the purpose of positioning materials is manipulating the materials only in one location. These materials have their sub categories including industrial trucks, conveyors, and cranes. Manual materials can be used as well without any equipment.

The conveyors will be used if a material is frequently moved between some specific points in fixed path, and also if there is a sufficient volume flow for justifying a fixed investment for conveyor. Conveyors have different types which include bulk load and unity load and the location may either be on floor, overhead, in floor. Examples of bulk conveyors are troughed belt, screw conveyors, magnetic belt, and bucket.

Cranes will be used for transporting goods loads in a vertical or horizontal variable path in restricted areas. And also, these are used if there is an insufficient volume flow or intermittent flow. Cranes are considered to be more flexible compared to conveyors since the loads are handled with respect based on their weight and shape.

But if compared to the industrial trucks, these have lesser flexibility because of the operations in the restricted areas. Cranes are mostly used with trolley and with tracks in a horizontal movement while used with hoists in a vertical movement. Crane types include stacker, gantry, bridge, and jib cranes.

Industrial trucks are not being provided with licenses for traveling on public roads. These are used for moving materials in variable paths and if there is an insufficient or a intermittent volume flow. These are more flexible than the conveyors and the cranes since the area of movement is not restricted.
