Locating Companies For Right Hand Drive Conversions

By Debra Walker

For many owners of American cars it may be necessary to convert them so that they are right hand drive models after moving to another country. When deciding on right hand drive conversions there are a couple of ways to achieve this. When importing a car it may not be illegal to drive it but a conversion will make your driving a lot easier and more comfortable.

The process of changing the controls is not just a case of re locating the steering wheel and foot controls. Things such as vents, seat belts and trim may also need to be moved to the other side. Other components such as the braking system and suspension struts also need to be modified or adjusted before the car can be driven on the roads and operated safely.

The first option when converting is to buy a kit from a store or internet supplier and do the work in your workshop. This can be a cost effective way of changing the vehicles controls and there are many kits available. It is worth noting that many kits are basic and when the job is completed many mechanical parts such as levers, nuts and bolts may be visible to the driver.

When trying to find a kit to carry out the work the online retailers can be a great place to start. A lot of these firms have kits in stock for many of the common cars on the road and the items will be delivered to you with diagrams. As well as the cost of the kit some other tools may be required and they may be able to supply you with these.

Another option for conversion is to hand the vehicle over to an engineering company and let them to do the work for you. There are many reputable companies who carry out these kinds of car modifications to a high standard. This will be a more costly option than doing the work yourself but all work carried out will be covered by a guarantee.

Any company that does your modifications will always result in a better finish than if it is done as a project in the home workshop. All of the parts will be hidden away and the vehicle will look like it was manufactured as a RH model. An advantage of using a company is that they offer after care for your vehicle and will be on hand should any problems arise after taking the car away.

When the conversion has been done your car should be inspected by a qualified engineer to make sure it is good to drive. If the car has been converted by a professional then it will be returned with all of the documents to say it has passed inspection. If the work has been carried out in the home workshop then the car can be submitted for checks.

When making any modifications to a car it should be noted that any warranty offered by the manufacturer will no longer be valid. Another point to consider is that the re sale value may be less as it will no longer be original. With any major modification to a motor vehicle you should always notify your insurers of the changes.
