Steps To Making Your Hot Rod Frames

By Thomas Reynolds

When one mentions hot rod, the common understanding is that a car has been modified to increase its speed. The car is then ideally used in racing. It is unique and reflects the taste and style of the designer. You may build your custom frame. In this case, you need to have the necessary tools. These are a welder, some metal cutting devices, a few hand tools and most of all the motivation. You should not do this alone. The project is tremendous to be handled by one individual. Here is how you can create your hot rod frames.

What you should think of are triangles. A truck frame is a triangle. This triangle has cross members. They need to go across to grasp the weight. They hold it such that it does not flex to a point where it cannot be repaired. Triangle shapes will endure more force. Deforming triangles will require you stretching its sides. This is never an easy task.

You need to consider the cost you will incur. You may own a welder. This already helps to save a lot in your budget. Examine the prices of the other tools like the grinders, cutters, and consumables. You may also need to consider the cost of gas, electricity, and labor. When doing this project, you may find that you spend a lot of time away from your loved ones.

You may think of just going to buy a frame. When you do this, then you are sure to consider the laws of the state. The DMV or the police department will give you the details on the cost you have to pay to tilt the frame you get. Different states have different laws. You should make an effort to know the laws that are in your state.

You should first remove parts like the cab, front and rear ends, and the engine. All the sections that are joined to the frame should be eliminated. You should also remove the areas that are rusty. Doing this, assists to move the frame to the table. You can complete this task without a frame table, but you will be slower. You can weld even when the fame has not cooled off.

Then you need to put that frame on a frame table. After doing this, then you should use a torch and air hammer to make short work of the rivets found everywhere. If you are making your crossbrasing, then you will not need the factory cross member. Use a 2*1/4 inch thick strap to bind the inside of this frame wall.

Make boxing plates for the frame rails. Ensure that they match the rails. Mark the boxing plates to match the truss made. After doing this, then you can put everything together. At this point, you can install the engine and transmission. Install the exhaust to ensure the K-member is not in its way. Try to find the perfect place to fit the K-member.

For effectiveness of your K-member, make sure it supports both the upper and the lower frame parts. Put your transmission where it was. You will then be able to weld the areas you could not get to. Turn your frame so that your welding is faster and so that you fill the holes found at the bottom of the frame. You then need to flatten these welds. Sun blast the frame and then choose a color to paint with.
